A cafe in Honolulu whose owners had the audacity to ban voters of President-elect Donald Trump from dining at their establishment has since seen its ratings on Facebook and Yelp tumble faster than dominoes.
According to Fox News, the brouhaha began when the owners of the 8½ Cafe proudly posted a handmade sign on their restaurant’s front door that read, “If you voted for Trump you cannot eat here!”
“No Nazis,” added the sign, whose owners had clearly never read up on Nazism, an ideology that drew heavily on discrimination, exclusionary policies and demonization of political opponents.
Take a look at the sign below:
Ever since this story went viral, the restaurant’s ratings have plummeted on both its Facebook page, where it hosted a 1.8 rating as of late December, and Yelp, where its rating had collapsed to just two stars out of five.
Some of the comments left by frustrated diners on its Yelp page were especially telling.
“Have been all over the world and have dined at some of the finest restaurants on the planet, but I can assure you one thing,” wrote diner TJK from Racine, Wisconsin. “I will not waste my time nor my money to go to your restaurant. You would be best served to focus on food and not on insulting millions who expressed their political choice in the voting booth.”
Did the couple who run the restaurant deserve a break, though? Some might argue yes, given what Jali, wife of restaurant founder Robert Warner, had to say.
“Reached for comment Tuesday, Jali downplayed the sign’s supposed ban,” Fox News reported. “She told FoxNews.com the restaurant is not actually asking customers whether they voted for President-elect Trump, and said even if they see a customer with a Trump shirt, ‘We don’t put anything different (in) your food.’”
“Robert just wants to express how much he doesn’t like Trump,” she added. “If people take it personally or it hurts them, we cannot help. That’s why we say they have (a) choice if they want to come or not come. We don’t force them.”
The sincerity there was much appreciated, assuming she was not lying and this statement was not issued just because the couple wanted to stop losing money.
Regardless, here is a key hint for all current and future business owners: If you want to avoid seeing your business fall to pieces, then try to keep politics out of the office. Former Secretary State Hillary Clinton referred to a third of the country as “deplorables,” and you saw how much good that did her.
