Drudge Report Sabotaged… Fingers Point to Obama Gov. Attack

A cyberattack which left the Drudge Report down briefly is being blamed by the site’s eponymous founder on the Obama administration, according to the International Business Times.

The Drudge Report was briefly taken offline at about 7p.m. Eastern Time last night, the result of a massive distributed denial of service attack, or DDoS. Such attacks route false traffic to the website, making it difficult for real traffic to get through; they are also notoriously hard to trace.

At the time of the attack, Drudge’s top headline read, “MOSCOW MOCKS OBAMA ‘LAME DUCK.’” The attack also took place on the same day that the United States announced sanctions against Russia for its alleged role in hacking Democrat email accounts, the Washington Times reports.

In a tweet on his rarely-used verified Twitter account, Drudge said, “Is the US government attacking DRUDGE REPORT? Biggest DDoS since site’s inception. VERY suspicious routing [and timing].”

A later tweet read, “Attacking coming from ‘thousands’ of sources. Of course none of them traceable to Fort Meade … “

Fort Meade, in Maryland, is one of the military’s top centers for intelligence and cyber-warfare.

But would the Obama administration actually go after the Drudge Report?

As the International Business Times pointed out, “Government officials have wrangled with Drudge before over his alleged false claims. With 2 million daily unique visitors and around 700 million monthly page views, DrudgeReport.com was the top site for referral traffic in 2014 to the Daily Mail, CNN, Fox News, Roll Call, Breitbart, The New York Times, USA Today, Associated Press and other news sites. Its readers were loyal, staying on the site for an average of 30 minutes, Politico reported.”

There was also the fact, as IBT reported, that the attacks came at the same time as an alleged attack against Russia-owned news network RT.

Is Obama’s government behind the attack on the Drudge Report? It certainly seems odd that one of the most pro-Trump outlets on the internet would be targeted on the same day that Russian sanctions were announced, on the same day as an alleged targeting of RT. While we certainly can’t confirm, circumstantial evidence certainly places this beyond the realm of just mere conspiracy theories.
